Lake
Welsh was impounded in 1976 on the Swuanano Creek, 10 miles south
of Mount Pleasant. The lake has a surface area of 1,296 acres and
a maximum depth of 50 feet. The lake serves as a cooling reservoir
for American Electric Power Company creating a year round warm water
lake and providing excellent winter angling opportunities.
Lake
Welsh has a current lake record bass of 15.23 lbs that was caught
on Dec 23, 1983 by current fishing guide Bill Ocker. The lake
is well regarded as one of the top power plant fishing lakes in
the state and draws fishermen from hundreds of miles away. With
an 18 inch slot limit, Lake Welsh does not see the tournament
fishing pressure that many of the other lakes see, but it does
not deter fisherman who want to catch a healthy limit of bass
and a chance at landing the fish of a lifetime.
The
fishing structure on Welsh is very diverse enabling various techniques
to be productive. The lake is chock full of timber, so much so
that running the lake at high speed can be dangerous.
There are also numerous points, humps, rocks, brush piles and
sparse amounts of vegetation that all hold fish. Just as the structure
varies, baits that can be productive do as well. Carolina rigs
and drop-shot rigs are commonly used and produce consistent action.
Lake Welsh can also be friendly to fisherman who like fishing
moving baits like spinnerbaits and jerkbaits.
Lake
Welsh has only one boat ramp that is located just off FM 1735.
There is no access fee required and it is open year round.
