Lake Monticello is built off of Blundell and Smith Creeks on the Cypress River Basin and is widely known as one of the most popular power plant lakes in Texas. With a surface area of 2000 acres, maximum depth of 40 feet and various types of structure like hydrilla, timber and creek channels, Lake Monticello fishing in the winter can be awesome.

Due to the warm waters generated from the Lake Monticello power plant, the fish stay active during the cold weather months and generally spawn earlier than in normal Texas reservoirs. The best time period for fishing Lake Monticello starts around Thanksgiving and runs through February. Popular baits for this lake are Carolina and Texas-rigged lizards, spinnerbaits and soft jerkbaits like the Zoom Super Fluke.

Another reason for the quality of fish that come from Lake Monticello is because of the slot limit that has been implemented by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Anglers may not keep bass measuring between 14 and 24 inches and may only retain 5 bass that fall outside of the slot limit.

Titus County operates the only park on Lake Monticello and the only public boat launch. The park is located approximately 2 miles off FM 127. The park is open year around and an access fee is required.

It is advisable that when fishing Lake Monticello, particularly on a weekend, that you check for any tournaments that may be going on. The quality of the fishing in this lake draws people and tournaments from hundreds of miles away and can make for a crowded environment for people just looking to "fun fish".
